Plenary Sessions

Plenary Session 1: Dr. J. Paul Tanner

Title: “Striving for Rest: Hebrews 4:1-13 and the Goal of Finishing Well”

The author of Hebrews warned his readers that some might be in danger of coming short of God’s Rest.  This message will look at the meaning this passage had for the original audience in light of its Old Testament background, and draw application for how this applies to those of us today who are striving to finish well in our Christian walk and ministry.

Plenary Session 2: Dr. J. Paul Tanner

Title: “Battling Hardships: Hebrews 10:32-39 and the Challenge of Endurance”

The author of Hebrews was well aware that his readers had suffered for their Christian profession, yet he challenged them to endure in their faith.  This message will consider the importance of a growing and active faith—despite struggles we may have to go through—in light of what awaits us at our Lord’s future return.

Plenary Session 3: Bishop Alberto Patacsil

Title: “The Whole World for Jesus (Acts 1:4-11)”

The message seeks to point out the patterns that emerge from history toward effective witness: The gospel is above culture, partners with culture, relates to culture and converts culture. It is a disaster if the gospel is compromised by culture.

Title: "Why Conversations, Not Confrontations: Reaching the Postmodern Generation"
by: Mike Cariño

Description: We live in a changing world with an emerging postmodern culture. It has become more difficult to do evangelism today. We need new ways of reaching out to the new generation, and become like the men of Issachar who “understood the times they lived in and knew what they should do” (I Chronicles 12:32).  There is an on-going methodical shift from the confrontational approach of the past, towards a more conversational attitude to pre-believers.  Today, people prefer others to walk with them, instead of preach at them.  Thus, successful evangelism today integrate spiritual conversations that engage people in such a way that the next time they see us, they would want to continue the conversation.

Title: "Contextualization - God's Way and Our Way for Reaching the World"
by: Paul Sung-Ro Lee

Description: The Lord Jesus has commanded us, his Church, to "go" into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15). The task of "going" effectively into our world demands a skillful contextualization of all our efforts to transmit God's truths regardless of culture and generation. Besides, Jesus not only gave us theeminent mandate but also empirically demonstrated to us perfect modes of contextualization through his incarnation. This session will elaborate upon and suggest some of the contextualization methodology that may serve as a path-finder for outreach and cross-cultural missionary efforts of the 21st century Church from the missiological perspective.
